Motoring Madness! - Jan 2007
All over the world when motoring enthusiasts gather they talk of the need for speed. The discussion will twist and turn until inevitably the issue of man vs. machine is debated. For some, the discussion will centre on recent technological innovations and the advantage they offer. For others, the merit of individual drivers is cited. However, when the dust has settled and the conversation has become more subdued, said men will gather together in a quiet corner, and in hushed revenant tones, recall those events that occurred on that fateful day in Bedale on the 13th Jan 2007.
A challenge had been issued and answered. Fred Thompson had demanded a trial of speed. Each competitor was to design, prepare and race a car of his own build. This car was to cover the distance of 10ft in the shortest possible time; powered only by a one pound weight. As a reward, Fred was prepared to offer a most excellent prize to the competitor whose car bested all comers. As members arrived at Bedale that fateful morning, gone was the normal exchange of genial greetings. Friendships forged over many years would mean nothing on this day, it was do or die. Many members had spent weeks, days and in some cases hours designing the ultimate in automotive excellence. For some, Christmas had been ruined, for others marriages had been pushed to the brink and for a few bankruptcy now loomed. All in the pursuit of fame and glory at the NEMS racing challenge.
