Answering the call that day was Geoff Rowlinson with ‘Bessie’, a rear wheel drive car geared to derive maximum torque over a short distance. Brian Richardson had constructed the ‘Gilling Flyer’, a lean, mean, driving machine. Our third competitor was John Herdman with the ‘Wickham Whizz’. With a direct drive mechanism to the rear wheels, it was designed to leave other competitors shaking in its wake. Barry Richardson had designed ‘Bomber’, with rear wheel drive and frictionless front wheels; he intended to obliterate all comers. Ken Roberts had constructed the highly menacing ‘Pandrum’ based on the design of a first world war anti tank weapon. Dennis Edward had built ‘Dennis’ Doubler’, so called as it represented the only four wheel drive vehicle in the event. Tim Roylance had built ‘Tim’s Terrific Turbo’, powered via a one pound lever coupled to the rear wheels. It was slow to start, but with a massive turbo boost he hoped to eradicate the opposition. Mike Duncalf had arrived with a choice of racing cars. Mike finally decided to race with ‘Mach 10’, with a four stage cylindrical drive mechanism, Mike definitively had his eye on the most excellent prize.
